" 3 Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever. 4 But you, Daniel, keep this prophecy a secret; seal up the book until the time of the end, when many will rush here and there, and knowledge will increase.” Daniel 12:3-4
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10
The catchphrase “We are living in the end times” has been popular among Christians who are anticipating the second coming of Jesus. They cite “the increase of knowledge” from Daniel’s prophecy. Well, from the invention of the printing press in the 1400’s to the digital age, knowledge has expanded rapidly. With AI, knowledge is growing exponentially. It has been the driving force behind a new type of learning. Virtually everyone uses it; many without even realizing it. And why not? It creates, it enhances, it improves. It solves problems, finds solutions, even teaches itself. But user beware…
This machine learning can take on human qualities which mimics reality. Perhaps you’ve seen people sharing their “conversion stories” on YouTube, or watched a worship song by a secular artist – only to discover that it was AI generated. Some people have even opted to have a virtual relationship with an AI generated person, over engaging in a real relationship. This past December, People magazine featured a story: Woman Marries AI-Generated Boyfriend, Wears Augmented Reality Smart Glasses to Exchange Rings
Meanwhile, this treasure trove of artificial intelligence requires massive amounts of energy. Data centers are popping up everywhere, as are electric rates. While many find AI extremely beneficial, privacy issues and algorhythmic bias are still a concern.
Much has been said about the Pope’s comments urging AI creators to hit the “kill switch”. While extreme, it is time to put guardrails around the use of AI. It needs ethical oversight. That might involve censorship. But to a 13yr old who wants know how to commit suicide, AI should not provide the know-how.
From a prophetic perspective, AI gone rogue presents a real quagmire. For those with nefarious intentions, it could signal the end of civilization; the undoing (or takeover) of the world as we know it. The Word of the Lord to Daniel speaks to our current situation. “Seal up the book until the time of the end” Why? People will be on a frenzied search for knowledge. Knowledge is power. And power can be used to control. Control often leads to destruction.
Here's my proposal: Use AI, but don’t let AI use you. Click less, pray more. Ingest truth, reject falsehood. Jesus said: Your word is truth. Develop a spiritual intelligence (SI) that knows how to discern between what’s true and real from what appears to be true and real.
The Apostle Paul tells us how: The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for, “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.” I Cor. 2: 15,16
I believe AI filters will come, as boundaries and safeguards are put in place. But they do not replace the need to filter all things through the spiritual intelligence of the Spirit. Use your knowledge of the Scriptures as the lens through which you can interpret what is presented as authentic and true. Instead of the rush toward knowledge, seek wisdom – which is a byproduct of the fear of the Lord. Your SI will outshine AI.
Use AI, but invest in your SI
