The Presence of the Holy Spirit

John 14

Where is the presence of the Holy Spirit?

God’s presence: two types

  • God’s omnipresence: everywhere, all the time
  • God’s manifest presence; particular moments in time for particular situations.

God wants you to experience his manifest presence

God has always wanted to be present with us as human beings

  • After rejecting God’s presence in the Garden, God still wanted to be close.
  • God made a covenant with Abraham
  • God appeared on Mt Sinai
  • God instructed Moses to build a tabernacle. Later on, a temple
  • God wanted to be so close that He himself appeared in the person of Jesus

John 1:14  “So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.”

  • Before he ascended, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost the church was born when the Holy Spirit came on followers of Jesus

Where is the Holy Spirit?

  • He is present within you

I Cor 6:19-20  “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”

What does the presence of the Holy Spirit in us mean?

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.”

  • Advocate: “Paracletos” (Greek) – from which we get the word paralegal. Advoca in French means “lawyer”
  • The Holy Spirit is like the family lawyer; one you can trust, one you go to for advice, one who knows the details of your life.

The Holy Spirit is advocating for you, by advocating for Jesus in your life.

He’s saying:  This is what Jesus wants for you.  This is what Jesus wants to say to you. This is what he wants to speak into your life.

Four Ways the Holy Spirit wants to be an Advocate in your life

#1 The Holy Spirit is a present strength in weakness

  • “Comforter” Com-fort “with strength”
  • When you are at the end of your rope, the Holy Spirit wants to give you strength

#2.  The Holy Spirit leads you towards truth, when you don’t know what’s right

  • The Holy Spirit acts as an illuminator

#3.  The presence of the Holy Spirit gives direction.

  • When you have options, the Holy Spirit guides you to make the best decision

#4  The Holy Spirit’s presence brings peace in the face of the unknown

  • The Holy Spirit is the great encourager

The presence of the Holy Spirit is not how you feel.  It’s about acknowledging who you need.

I Corinthians 3:16 Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 17 God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

  • The Holy Spirit is present when we gather collectively.
