Judge Not
Matthew 7:1-6
Judge \ ˈjəj \
Verb: “to evaluate” / “ to render a verdict or a decision”
A Contradiction?
- In chapter 7:1. Jesus says “Do not judge.”
- In chapter 7:6,15 Jesus makes a judgment, by referring to people as dogs and pigs, and issuing a warning about false prophets.
- We judge everyday.
| Do not judge does not mean – Do not make judgments.
It means Don’t pass judgment. |
Do not judge hypocritically
Do not judge appearances (I Samuel 16:7)
Judge: Only God is qualified
- Only God sees and knows everything about us.
“Stop having a measuring stick for other people. There is always at least one more fact, which we know nothing about, in every person’s situation.” (Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest)
Instead of passing judgment, Do THIS:
- Practice SELF-REFLECTION
- “Look again” (the root of the Latin for for respect)
- Face your faults
Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Step 4:Alcoholics Anonymous
B. Start noticing the LOG in your eye (7:3)
C. Spend less time and energy focusing on your neighbor’s speck (7:4)
D. Develop a plan to remove your own log(s).
- Seek to RESTORE the relationship. (Galatians 6:2)
- How? Gently
- Speak the TRUTH in LOVE (Eph 4:15)
- Dogs, Pigs and Pearls is about sharing the Gospel.
Honor the pace of God in people’s lives.
- Take off your judge’s robe, put on Christ (towel)
- What if they still attack you?
I Peter 2:23-24 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
